{"id":123,"date":"2010-05-18T09:26:00","date_gmt":"2010-05-18T16:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/karateteaching.uploadmysite.com\/?p=123"},"modified":"2010-05-18T09:26:00","modified_gmt":"2010-05-18T16:26:00","slug":"amophie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.karateteaching.com\/blog\/amophie\/","title":{"rendered":"Amophie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a exercise I do with my junior students from time to time where I give them 15 minutes to make up a kata&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Basically they pair off and work together to create a short kata of 10-15 moves which they&#8217;ll come up and demonstrate in synchronized fashion for the rest of the class. The only guidlines I give them are these:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>be creative, try to think of something unique yet practical <\/li>\n<li>you may take sequences from other kata, so long as it doesn&#8217;t exceed 3 concurrent techniques<\/li>\n<li>it must make sense application-wise (and I might ask them to demonstrate the bunkai after their performance)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_tAMvG3zBGTs\/S_LO_kSewfI\/AAAAAAAAAC8\/WQ7k6p7LkQU\/s1600\/shikodachi.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_tAMvG3zBGTs\/S_LO_kSewfI\/AAAAAAAAAC8\/WQ7k6p7LkQU\/s1600\/shikodachi.jpg\" \/><\/a>So last year when I asked my class to do this simple exercise, for the most part the boys were horrible at it. They had a hard time getting it together, some completely freaked out about the idea they would be demonstrating for everyone else, and this paralyzed them taking action and creating something.<\/p>\n<p>However, the girls on the other hand got to work. They talked, they practiced and they created.
